Time for some Responsibilities

Funny how someone else can spark an idea in your mind...

The other day at the gym, I walked in on my daughter having a conversation with the lady that was watching after her.  The lady offered Abby a sticker for having helped to pick up toys and then told her that after 6 stickers, she could pick something out of the treasure box... and there it was! After weeks of picking up toys from the living room floor, having a discussion of how she must brush her own teeth or take a bath, I figured out a way for my toddler to learn responsibilities and have fun in doing daily tasks!

And here comes the sticker chart! Does anyone else get all "tingly" inside when they think of a child's sticker chart or is it just me?  I LOVE that kids have chores and help out around the house and have always requested that anyone living in my house be responsible for their things and should realize it is a luxury to have a nice home to live in.

1. We went to our local dollar store and purchased a piece of HOT PINK posterboard and then I cut it lengthwise into 2 sections (which will allow me to do 4 seperate weeks)= $0.69

Sidenote: We also picked out some cool stickers (which I let her choose) at the store, as well. I figured this is a good way for her to visualize actually doing the tasks and completing them= $4.00 total for over 500 stickers!

2. I then measured out one side for 7 days of the week + square that says "Days of the Week" and then 1 square that is extra. I figured you could use this square for an "incentive" box or just leave blank

3. I then put a line straight across the top of the other side of the grid and wrote in the word "Mornings" on the far left end and then "Evenings" on the far right end

4. I then measured out the second side of the grid to fit the amount of "responsibilities" that Abby is going to be accountable for each day and put lines. She has a total of 9, but have space for 10, just in case I would like to add one

Her responsibilities include (reminder: she is going to be 3 years old)

Mornings
  • Brush Teeth
  • Get Dressed
  • Feed Libby (our dog)
  • Eat Breakfast (either done at home or at sitter's)
Evenings
  • Bath & Dress for Bed
  • Brush Teeth
  • Pick up Toys
  • Eat Dinner
  • Daily Chore- which can be anything that I might pick that day (for example. help with laundry or fold clothes or sweep porch, etc)
5. I then made small sheets of paper that include the "Rewards" that she will earn when completing the tasks at hand. At the end of each day, we will evaluate her progress and then if everything is completed, she will be allowed to pick from the "Rewards Bucket" (round container) and the item chosen will be displayed and then completed the next day

In order to decorate the jars, I put a piece of ribbon around each and then hot glued a piece of decorative paper with the names of each jar

** You can do whatever you might like for this bucket, but we did things that wouldn't cost much money and allow us to spend time with our family, as a whole

Rewards Bucket examples include:
  • Help Mommy bake something
  • Have a picnic
  • Do a puzzle
  • Play with Bubble Wrap
  • Play Dress Up
  • Eat a popsicle
  • Paint Nails
  • Draw on Mirror or Window
  • Play "Follow the Leader"
  • Play "Red Light, Green Light"
  • Go to library
  • Talk a Walk
  • Draw with Sidewalk Chalk
  • Play a Game
  • Play in "Garden"
  • Make a card
  • Have a tea party
  • Do a craft
  • Blow Bubbles
  • Play Doctor
  • Play School
  • Choose a piece of Candy
  • Play Hide & Seek
  • Play with Play Dough

**At the end of each month, we will also evaluate progress made and then if satisfactory, she will be allowed to choose from the "Extra Special Rewards Jar"

Extra Special Rewards Jar examples include:
  • Go for Ice Cream
  • Go to store and buy one new toy
  • Go to bookstore and buy one new book
  • Go to Exploration Station
  • Slumber Party
  • Build a tent and camp out in living room
  • Pajama Day
  • Have a friend over to play
I am excited to have her start this "journey" of learning how to be responsible and happy while also being a vital part of our family!

Will keep you posted on the progress and I am sure what are to be tantrums in the very near future!

I would like to thank a fellow blogger, Living Laughing and Loving, for this great idea (CLICK HERE to see their take on the sticker chart as well as an adorable picture of the guest bloggers' daughter).  It is great to see that other people have the same desire to raise happy, healthy and RESPONSIBLE children in today's society!

As a new Mom, I am always looking for ideas, suggestions and advice!

Did your kid(s) have "sticker charts"? What age did you begin? What advice would you have for other Moms out there??
